Description
Professionally restored pair of W-6M Monoblocks, paired with the Heathkit WA-P2 preamps, and the matching FM-3 Tuner. This is a rare system, restored to exacting standards and ready to play. Since restoration it has seen less than 25 hours of use at very low volumes.
Audio source was a Thorens TD 145 record player (not or sale) and the speakers were Specimen Liederhorns Horn Speakers from Chicago (pictured herein but NOT included in this lot - willing to discuss if interested).
While describing high fidelity is a highly personal exercise and difficult to do well, the Heathkits delivered the best sonic versions of many favorite albums, across multiple genres. The sound is the typical warm, full spectrum experience accessible only via tube circuits of certain configuration. The Williams design on these 1950s Heathkits are one such exemplar.
In 2020, these Heathkits (Amps, Preamps and Tuner) were all systemically restored to factory or (better-than-factory in some cases) spec using best-in-class or NOS parts as appropriate by Jeff Hall at Muse Audio, in Ann Arbor Michigan. All out-of-spec resistors were replaced. Chassis was cleaned. All pots and switches cleaned. Grounded plugs have been added to the power amplifiers.
The cost of the restoration was ,107.70
Original Peerless 16431 output transformers on both units, considered to be among, if not the best ever produced. Very few of these W-6M units were believed to have been made by Heathkit in its Benton Harbor, MI facility.
INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION:
- Pair Heathkit W-6M Mono Block 70 watt vintage power amplifiers with matched and biased tubes (Genalex Russian Gold Lion KT88)- Pair Heathkit WA-P2 preamplifiers (with original manual and wiring diagrams)
- 1 Heathkit FM-3 Tuner- POWERSTAT Model 3PN116B Variable Autotransformer (Variac)-The pictured speakers are not included, nor are any auxiliary interconnects
The system is ready to be used immediately. As per the original specifications and Jeff Hall's recommendation, this system has only been run at 110 volts using the variable transformer included with this auction. One of the on-board bias meters is not currently working. The other one is. This is a very easy fix should you wish to restore the bias meter to working state - there are many articles online on how to proceed.
Will be shipped in multiple boxes. All tubes labeled and removed. Everything padded and double boxed.
All inquiries and local buyers welcome.
Thank you.
