    Photographing Amber
    Properties of Amber
    All about Amber
    The Origin of Amber
Differing from tree sap, it is the tree resin that is the origin of amber. Beginning in canals and pockets of the tree as a semi solid amorphous organic substance - adding millions of years, some heat, time and pressure results in the beautiful and much sought after semi precious amber. Amber is therefore a fully fossilized natural item. Mexican and Dominican amber is 24-30 million years old, coming from the upper Oligocene to lower Miocene periods. Mexican and Dominican amber was formed from the resin of an ancient tropical tree, the Hymenea
    .
    Amber vs Copal
Where amber and copal have the same chemical formula, copal is actually very young amber, 10000 years vs at least 20 million years. Changes that come with millions of years differentiate the two. Amber has had time, heat and pressure to convert the organic molecules via polymerization into long chain polymers, and therefore a more solid complete product. Copal on the other hand contains liquids in the form of oils, acids and alcohol which give it it's distinct smell and is used for incense and the like. The smell test is one way to differentiate the two by inserting a hot needle into the stone and smelling the result. Although, the best test for differentiation is by rubbing a small amount of solvent or acetone on the surface of the piece - copal will result in a sticky residue surface, where as amber will not be effected.
    Different types of Amber
Mexican and Dominican amber has more clarity and is more likely to contain inclusions of fossils and organic matter than Baltic amber. Mexican and Dominican amber ranges from pale yellow through to amber to cognac to red. The red amber from this region is naturally red due to absorbed iron and is not treated like red Baltic amber. One of the most desired colors of Mexican and Dominican amber is the blue/green, and blue colors. At certain light angles the blue / green colors become prominent making this region's amber unique. Mexican and especially Dominican amber has more fluorescence under the black light compared with the Baltic amber. Mexican and Dominican amber also tends to be untreated when it comes to market.
Due to it's abundance and commonality, most people associate amber with Baltic amber.  Baltic amber is mostly heavily treated, including heating in oil to improve clarity, using heat and burning to create colors. The colors can range from transparent, bright yellows through to darker yellows, cognac, honey color and occasionally hues of red. Our Mexican and Dominican amber is NOT treated, ever. We guarantee that it is natural and organic.
    Grading Amber
    Color
Amber comes in many variety of colors, ranging from clear yellow through to deep dark colors. Some color definitions include, honey, cognac, green, green/blue, red, aqua, violet and blue. Mexican amber is especially well-known for its blue/green hues and also the rare deep red color.
    Clarity
Amber clarity can range from transparent through to opaque, with the transparent amber the most prized.
    Inclusions
When the Amber tree's resin was released it sometimes trapped insects, other plants and other materials like fungi. These inclusions can add great value to the amber. Mexican and Dominican amber is well known for their inclusions
    Metaphysical properties of Amber
Amber is known for it's warming, stimulating, clarifying and calming properties Amber is a very effective protection stone; it serves as a protective shield against taking on others pain in healing sessions. Amber aids in healing and strengthening the body. Amber helps on find love and see the beauty in all things.
Blue/green fluorescent amber is unique to tropical ambers found only in Chiapas, the Dominican Republic, and Indonesia where the now extinct Hymenaea Protera tree once thrived. It is the presence of the hydrocarbon, perylene, in the amber that causes this blue green fluorescence. Perylene is formed when organic matter is burnt. It is believed that smoke containing perylene was deposited into the sticky resin leaking from the trees during forest fires, and is therefore present the fossilized resin today.
Fluorescence is the light that molecules give off when they’ve gone into an excited or energized electronic state. When natural light passes through amber on a white surface, it is refracted by the white surface and for the most part passes right through the amber. When on a black surface, the ultraviolet light is refracted by the actual amber itself and converted by hydrocarbons to a lower frequency reflecting the blue/green that our eyes can see.
To show off the fantastic play of color and light inherent in Mexican amber, we photograph it under a UV black light, a LED white light, and in natural sunlight to highlight the blue green fluorescence of this special type of amber. The UV light is also used in grading to show clarity, sap or flow lines, clouds, inclusions, and impurities.
Mexican amber is between 24-30 million years old. Unlike most gems, Mexican amber is a warming, organic substance, possessing protective, healing, and metaphysical properties that have been used by the local Mayans for generations.
