    Description

NOTICE---NOTICE----IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!!! READ THIS FIRST………This listing is for specific electronic services as described below.
The item in the pictures is not for sale, it is an example.
When you purchase this listing for service on your machine, I will send you a receipt and will contact you to arrange shipping or drop off.
If you need packing instructions, I can help you. You will find more information below.
There are a great many Phase Linear 4000 preamps still out there in the world, both the first one (with the joystick) and the series II.
The problem is that they usually don’t work, or only barely work.
That is not a pretty matter if you have the matching power amp and would like to recapture your youth by having the system back up and running.
What’s worse, almost nobody is able to bring them back to life any more.
Most present day technicians would not recognize it if you put it on the bench in front of them.
    So what to do?
Some folks will tell you that either the 4000 is not a good sounding piece, or it is just unfixable.
They are wrong, I do them all the time and have for quite some time, and yours is not likely to be worse than all the others.
So for a rather quick look at what is required, the first problem is that the unit will have a large number of bad solder joints in it.
Both the original 4000 and the Series II have mother boards that have other PC boards that plug in.
All of the places where the plugs are, and there are many, will be defective, so I must resolder everything in sight.
After this is done, It is always necessary to replace the capacitors in the regulated power supply so they won’t be hummy.
After that, the controls must all be cleaned and deoxidized.
Once these things are done, the baby usually comes up and plays well.
After a bit of cosmetic and burn in, they can go home and perform well for the long haul.
Now, what if the unit has some special and unusual problem?
If you are unsure, you can always opt to start with a diagnostic to determine exactly what is required.
Go the my diagnostic listing, #362034998991, purchase that, and we are on the hunt.
Further, what if this unit is your heart’s delight, and you wish to make it as perfect as humanly possible.
No problem, premium options are available.
Lastly, what if one of the “black box” functions is out, such as the peak unlimiter or the auto correlation?
    This could be problematic.
There are parts difficulties associated with these functions.
I have found that most folks who send in these preamps are interested in high quality preamp function……that is, good sound.
They usually do not use the “black box” modes.
So, I always test them to see, but that is pretty much it.
These functions are not critical to the use of the preamp.
Shipping:  A 4000 is not difficult to pack for shipping.
They are light and not enormous so they pack well.
Nonetheless, they must be packed properly.
I can tell you exactly how this is done.
Note that this listing says "free local pickup".  This does not mean that you must come to Texas with it, although you can if you wish.  Ebay requires that I specify something in the listing about shipping.  Since we don't know in advance whether I can reuse your packing and cannot predict return shipping costs it is easiest to save the issue of packing and shipping costs to the end of the process. If you are unsure how to go about packing and shipping the unit to me, or what your return shipping costs might be, send me a message and I will help you.
Restoration services are aimed at units that are mostly functional.
If your machine is blown up or severely compromised, the better choice is to purchase a diagnostic.
The diagnostic will get you a full report including the nature of overt defects and what is needed to return the unit to premium condition.
The item number for the diagnostic is 362034998991.
If you are uncertain which listing you should purchase, send me a message with information about the condition of your unit.  I will advise.
Turn around time varies.  Feel free to send me a message to inquire about how much time your unit might require.
The service warranty on completed units is one year from the date of return to you, details available on request.
Feel free to address any and all questions to me via eBay messaging.   Thanks for checking this out! Bill
